Everybody knows the gorgeous aria "O mio babbino caro" but few people know the opera it comes from, Gianni Schicchi by Puccini. It forms part of Il Trittico, a trio of one-act operas that provide a wonderful evening's entertainment of contrast, comedy and drama.
In Gianni Schicchi, a black comedy, a family schemes to get round the will left by a rich uncle.
It is preceded by Il tabarro (The Cloak), a more sombre tale of jealousy and murder set in Paris.
Thirdly we have Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica) concerning a nun’s sacrifice and familial yearning when sent to a convent to repent her sins.
This concert performance was a good opportunity for audiences to discover these little-known gems of the repertoire.
There were some surprises, such as certain cast members wearing T-shirts demonstrating their opposition to the budget cuts inflicted on them by the Arts Council!!! However we can fully sympathise with them, and I would like to offer them every support and backing.
